Choosing a secondary school in Burnham - Part 1: What you need to know

Make informed choices and help us fight for fair access to education.

Burnham has been without a non-selective secondary school since 2019, and that’s left many local families facing limited, costly, and often impractical options for their children’s education.

When applying for secondary schools, there are a few key issues Burnham parents must consider:

1. Catchment vs. transport

A school may fall within your catchment area, but that doesn't mean your child can get there easily or affordably. Public transport options are limited and expensive, with some children commuting over 2 hours a day.

2. Grammar school isn’t for everyone

Selective schools only suit a small number of pupils. Every child deserves a fair chance at a good local school, one that meets their academic, emotional, and social needs.

3. Hidden costs all add up

Uniforms, travel, lunches, devices, after school clubs and trips all vary widely between schools, and the costs can be significant. It’s vital to check what’s expected before applying.

4. School ethos & support

Not all schools are equal when it comes to SEND support, behaviour policies or pastoral care. Ask direct questions and speak to current parents to get a clearer picture.
